Welcome to Logic of Love – personal and loving maternity care (kraamzorg) in Amsterdam.
At Logic of Love, everything is about you, your baby and your family.
Under my loving guidance, you will receive the support you need during this special, difficult, intense and beautiful period.
The name Logic of Love comes from my BIOlogical vision on pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period. As a mother and a healthcare professional, of course I have extensive knowledge and experience, but I also firmly believe in the instinct of the mother herself: follow your heart, feel what is going on inside you, then I will guide you in giving yourself and your child the best start.
Hello, my name is Emma Hovingh, I have been living in Amsterdam East with my husband and three children for five years.
After studying Humanities in Utrecht (a long time ago) I travelled a lot, saw a lot of the world and lived in several countries (my two oldest children were born in New Zealand). Since the birth of my oldest child I have been at home to take care of the home and the upbringing. Seven years ago we migrated back to the Netherlands, where I became pregnant with our youngest.
The idea of becoming a maternity nurse or (postpartum) doula had been on my mind for a while, but when our third child was born and I was allowed to receive kraamzorg myself for the first time, I knew for sure: this is what I want to give women: practical support, emotional support, empowering words and a shoulder to cry on when needed! When the youngest went to preschool I quickly retrained and now I am working as a maternity nurse with much love and pleasure. I don't want to do anything else!
If you plan to give birth at home, I will assist the midwife during the birth, help clean up and ensure that you enter the first night with your baby safe and prepared. If you give birth in the hospital, I will assist you as soon as possible after you return home and help you ‘land’ with your baby.
General tasks of a maternity nurse are:
• providing instruction, information and advice on the care and safety of mother and child.
• medical checks on the mother – counting your pulse, measuring temperature and position of the uterus, checking lochia and perineum, checking breasts and legs.
• medical checks on the baby – measuring temperature and weight, breathing, colour, stool and urine, navel check.
• assistance for the mother with breastfeeding and/or advice on preparing bottles
• providing assistance with showering/washing the mother.
• providing instruction on the preparation, setting up and carrying out of the first bath for the baby.
• changing the baby's crib or bed.
• regularly changing the mother's bed.
• observing, signaling and reporting any problems.
• maintaining the care plan.
• transferring and possibly reporting to the midwife and JGZ, the youth health care.
• cleaning the toilet and shower that the mother uses.
Additionally I lovingly prepare nutritious breakfasts, lunches, fruit snacks, and if desired also an evening meal, I do the laundry, play with older brothers and/or sisters or I can keep the baby with me while mother and father take a much-needed nap.
I will strive to ensure that the general household is maintained, but the care of mother and baby always comes first, which sometimes leaves less time for the above ‘household’ tasks.
Maternity care file
I work with an online maternity file called Atermes. In this I will keep track of the condition of mother and baby, write down useful tips and note any questions and appointments with the midwife or lactation consultant. When you first register, you will receive an activation email for this, so that you can view your data at all times.
In addition to being a maternity nurse, I am also a postpartum doula.
My services as a postpartum doula include, if desired:
• Reflexology: This is a gentle technique that applies pressure to specific points on the feet, hands, or ears. It promotes relaxation, improves circulation, and can help reduce pain or stress after childbirth.
• Massage: Postpartum massage helps relax muscles, reduces muscle tension, and promotes overall relaxation. It can also help reduce pain in the lower back, shoulders, or neck that many mothers experience after childbirth.
• Baby massage: I teach parents techniques for massaging their baby, which can help improve digestion, calm the baby, and strengthen the parent-child bond.
• Belly binding: This is an Eastern tradition in which the mother's belly is tightly bound with a cloth, which can help restore the abdominal muscles, reduce swelling, and promote a sense of support. A mother ‘opened’ during childbirth, this is a way of helping the body close again.
• Moxa treatment: This is a traditional technique in which I apply heat to certain acupuncture points using a moxa stick (dried herbs). It can help to balance the body's energy, relieve pain and speed up the recovery process.
• Cooking: I prepare nutritious meals, lightly inspired by the Ayurvedic tradition, that promote the mother's energy and recovery. Often healthy, easily digestible meals are cooked that are tailored to the specific needs of the mother, for example to support milk production or recovery after childbirth.
The postpartum doula services are not included in the standard maternity care package (kraamzorg) that is (partly) reimbursed by your health insurance.
I am also available outside the kraamzorg period, for example for the above treatments, cooking nutritious meals and a listening ear.
